What do you like to read? What do you like to write? What writing style do you enjoy? How do you make time to write with a busy schedule? Usually, there is a connection between what you like to read and what you like to write. And it is best to keep several journals around the areas you visit every day.
Your thoughts and ideas do not always correspond to when you want to write. So be prepared by having notebooks and pens in places you do not ordinarily think of… your pocketbook, your car, on your patio in the summer, and at work. The biggest deterrent to writing is thinking that you are too busy and/or when you are ready to write, the ideas do not flow. Sometimes it is good to wait for the flow to happen and that happens when you are relaxed.
Sometimes it is good to do research on a topic you want to write about. Research gives you good ideas and support for writing. Personal interviews are also a good way to learn about people and their different experience. Maybe you are not ready to write that book just yet. Note taking, interviews, and research may be the way to go until those ideas get popping in your head.
